Athenry Shawl
The Athenry Shawl is stitched with the rhythm of a song I’ve heard since I was a child, when Irish ballads filled our home like the scent of fresh soda bread. “The Fields of Athenry” was one of many that wove themselves into the fabric of our home. Songs full of heartbreak, hope, and history.
Named for both the haunting melody and the medieval town in County Galway, this shawl is a quiet tribute to the stories that shaped me. My mom was born just a few towns over. She carried her heritage with her when she moved to the U.S., filling our days with bits of Ireland, childhood nicknames with a touch of Gaelic added, and always, always music.
The Athenry Shawl echoes that legacy: light and airy, with soft bands of lace, glimmering eyelets, and a calming garter border. It’s the kind of knit that feels like a memory in your hands—simple, emotional, and gently compelling. Like the ballads I grew up with, it’s meant to be shared, cherished, and sung in stitches.
This two-skein, crescent-shaped shawl—with both written and charted directions—is perfect for an intermediate knitter but interesting enough for an advanced one.

A Little Bit About the Designer
Erin Clayton, the knitwear designer behind Erineen Designs, has been writing patterns for over 6 years and has created more than 60 designs, ranging from hats, cowls and mittens to shawls and garments.
She is especially known for her beautiful shawl patterns, and would freely admit they are her first love. Erin’s style is very clean and graphic, filled with texture, lace, as well as a cable here and there. She utilizes her background as a graphic designer to create clearly written patterns that are easy to knit, engaging, and oh so wearable.
Erin grew up in suburban New York but now lives in New Hampshire with her daughter, two squeaky guinea pigs, and a very needy golden retriever.
